There was an interesting post by a guy called 'Dave' on one of the better nutrition-related sites just recently, in which he talked about looking through photographs of himself as a newlywed and then at others taken after the birth of his first child and noticing that he had thickened somewhat around the middle....
Naturally, he was a little displeased at this discovery, to put it mildly!
It wasn't long before 'Dave' noticed that he was not alone in this syndrome, his other married friends also seemed to have increased in girth.
In discussing how to combat this tendency towards obesity, 'Dave' quoted Amy Gorin, Ph.D., focusing on long-term weight-loss strategies for couples.
Dr. Gorin's suggestions included:
-
Teaming up for positive results - choosing activity over being sedentary - biking, walking, taking yoga classes, dancing - anything active is good. Dr. Gorin suggested checking with your doctor before any major increases in physical activity.
-
Being wary of the 'garbage-can effect' - nibbling during food preparation and whilst clearing away may taste good but can pile on the pounds...
-
Staying positive and supportive of one another - "Nagging, controlling comments and unwanted policing usually backfire" as Dr. Gorin put it, “They really undermine someone’s motivation.”. Complimenting and encouraging each other's efforts is a far better idea.
'Dave' concluded by saying that it is never too late to change bad habits and suggested that one do as he had done and get diet help online from World Class Nutrition. That was what drew my attention to his post - I was so pleased to hear that someone else could see just how helpful
