An English professor of Fine Arts, Bruce Boucher has clearly long been enthusiastic about the works of Andrea
Palladio and, in 'The Architect In His Time', with the able assistance of photographer Paolo Marton, he encapsulates the last three decades-worth of research into the work of the Renaissance genius, in what he
rightly describes as 'user-friendly' form. This book should please
historians but it will also appeal to the less serious reader and is
probably the one to choose if you are only going to indulge in a single
book on the subject.
This 320-page book is packed to capacity with illustrations, including especially commissioned photographs of the fabulous interiors and exteriors of a number of
Palladio's finest works. His wood and stone bridges, churches, villas and palaces are
all included in Marton's breathtaking photographs and the temptation to book flights on the next plane bound for Italy is hard to resist!
Original floor plans and elevations have been photographed and included, along with a glossary of terms and maps, amongst other useful insights. This authoritative work is certainly worth including in the luggage for that trip to Italy and, if you just can't get away,
you can be consoled by the fact that looking at the photographs really is the next best thing to being there!
