Reluctant Cook - The Non-Cook's Cookbook - by Jane Gibb - ISBN
0713634375
This is a book left aboard, unread, which was, in fact, bought for a guest as a Christmas gift. The fact
that she left it behind when she left us in the middle of January,
demonstrates to us that we had underestimated just how far a person will
go to avoid changing the habits of a lifetime...
We both enjoy producing food - the mate is just a reasonably competent
cook and the skipper's a gifted natural chef so, when we got around to reading
this book, simply out of curiosity as to its' rejection by our guest,
(whose more than ample figure, and the diminished ships' stores, bore
testimony to her liking for food) we were both pleasantly surprised.
'The non-cook's cookbook' turned out to be a
practical, witty and useful addition to the ship's library. Reluctant Cook includes an excellent section on provisioning the
boat, (or Victualling,
as Jane Gibb calls it, using the proper traditional term); some
first-rate recipes; lots of tips and time-savers; masses of practical ideas and we
loved the illustrations.

| 'The Gourmet's
Companion ' . Edited by Cyril Ray - no
ISBN
You will have to hunt the libraries for this one. The flyleaf sports the legend 1963 ,
Eyre & Spottiswoode, London.
At Christmas '98, along with a few others who found themselves far from
home, a lovely Canadian couple, Bruce and Anita Fisher of 'Finnisterre
1' joined us for Christmas dinner aboard Leopard Normand III, berthed at
Humming Bird Marine, in Trinidad, West Indies.
The high spot of the captain's holiday was being presented by Bruce and
Anita with this delightful book. It contains wonderful stories,
recipes and poems and, on the subject of food and wine, eating and
drinking, some fabulous tales!
Cyril Ray has published plenty of books that are
available through Amazon but this one is not amongst them. Elsewhere, we
have seen second-hand copies advertised at anything between 8.00 and 49
US$ and, if we were not already the proud owners of a copy, we would
certainly want to acquire one...

| North Atlantic
Seafood by Alan Davidson - ISBN 040468153
One of our guests for Christmas '98 was kind enough to give the
captain this book which has proved very useful not just in the galley
but as a means of identifying a catch too! This is the 1980 Penguin
Books edition, part of their Penguin Cookery Library series. It
continues to be a source of pleasure and instruction, not to mention
delicious meals!
Various copies of North Atlantic Seafood
are available through Amazon.

| If every reader tells us about just one book
(the more the merrier) all our readers will get to hear about books they
might not otherwise have known existed and had the chance to enjoy - why
not drop us a line, with at least the book's title, name of the author
and ISBN details, and preferably with your description of the reason you
feel the book is worthy of inclusion in the library... Don't wait to see if anyone else bothers - they may be
waiting to see if you do!
