The area around the Azores, an archipelago out in the
Atlantic Ocean, is a breeding ground for some species of whale. Since
whale-hunting was banned in the area, the local mammal population has
enjoyed peace in which to breed and play, watched over carefully by various
interested groups.
In the summer, boats working out of Horta,
capital of Faial, take visitors out with them as they conduct research on
these amazing creatures and their habits. You may like to take a look at the
website at:
http://www.whalewatchazores.com
where there is plenty of information about
whales, research and trips out to watch, or even help, plus a gallery of
photographs like those above.
