One of the sailors of the world who knows a thing or two about sewing, having
started his sailing career in the days when all sails were repaired by
hand-stitching, is Utz Müller-Treu.
Born in 1932 in Germany, this man has sailed around the world alone three times
and accompanied once. He is eminently practical and inventive and was pleased when we noticed his
hand-stitched trousers.
"That's not the only interesting thing about them" he told us,
"they're reversible too!"
Sure enough, the trousers can be worn with the same convenience either way
around, having identical pocket arrangements on both sides of the cloth. The pair in the photographs (just click on the miniature to see each full-sized
photo and then click on Back to return) are the third pair he has made for
himself, all beautifully stitched in a manner any tailor could be proud of.
These are real sailor's trousers, made to be put on in a hurry, if the need
arises, without it mattering which way out they were left after removal!
Utz says he will be happy to make a pair for anyone who would like him to, totally hand stitched.
"All they need to do is come to Bequia (in St. Vincent and the Grenadines)
and bring me a pair of trousers which fits them well, so that I can make my
pattern from it. For US$100 I will make
them a pair of trousers just like mine".
Having had the opportunity to inspect them closely and at first hand, we'd say
that is an absolute bargain and worth booking a holiday in Bequia for! Apart
from the quality of the workmanship and the usefulness of the trousers, to have
anything made for you by this extraordinary man has to be good news. You'll find
his hats pretty well made too - have a look on the Treasure
Chest page, in the Naval History section...
