Do you ever remember a whole chunk of your life that would
otherwise have remained forgotten when a particular song is played on the
radio or a friend's music player?
Sometimes,
the music in itself is not particularly memorable, it just happens to have
been playing when something important happened. On the other hand, some
music evokes special feelings in itself. 'Good
Vibrations' by the Beach Boys stirs many people of our generation to
reminiscence, for example as does 'I'm Not In Love' by 10cc - a song that
many people remember hearing for the first time with great nostalgia. The
music from the original Star Wars movie evokes a response from many and
anyone who ever watched 'Dr. Finlay's Casebook' on British television
would recognize the theme music any time. The same is true for the theme
music from the police series, 'Z-Cars', or the other police series, 'Dixon
of Dock Green'. If you didn't hear the music in your head as you
were reading those titles, then either you never saw the programs or you
are somewhat tone deaf, perhaps?! Air
on a G String was used in a cigar advertisement for a while. If you ever
saw the advertisement, you probably still remember the brand name of the
cigar every time you hear that piece of music... How
about the theme from that great television series 'The Onedin Line', in a
more nautical vein? Wasn't that awe-inspiring music? We'd
love to hear about the music that stirs your memory, and whether
there is any current music that you think will stand the same sort of test
of time, so do send us an e-mail and share your favourite golden greats
with other readers.
