Mike Harvey was kind enough to abandon his chores a moment and send us the following...

In the American navy, around the time of the Spanish-American war, a standing order was introduced regulating the maximum length of a non-commissioned sailors' hair. A section of the same rule also limited the number of haircuts to one per month.

To stay on the safe side of these new rules the wise sailor opted for a very short cut which became known as a 'crew cut'...

In the same navy, in the days of sail, talking was strictly forbidden on deck.

The only place where sailors could meet whilst on deck was at one of the drinking water butts tied in the waist of the vessel.

A quick drink from the ladle allowed a short conversation on the news of the moment...these conversations came to be known as 'scuttle butt'...

Well, there you have it. Your turn!
