Those who saw this issue when the original MarineZine was online may
remember the article that was on this page. It was then moved to one of Chris
(The Boat) Price's web pages before going offline altogether. The article
was a spoof about people who raise their sails in port but never actually
cast off and sail anywhere and was a concept thought up by an excellent
sailor, John Burgess, an airline pilot who loved to sail in his free time.
Sadly, John Burgess lost his
life at
sea, off the northern coast of Spain on the 4th of April 2003, on passage
from Gosport to Mallorca.
We dedicate this page to a celebration of our brief acquaintance with John
Burgess by sharing some photographs of him aboard Leopard Normand III at
Horta Marina in November
2000.
John offered to prepare some of the food for a barbecue
and we all imbibed plenty of fortifying liquids while we worked.
Afterwards, we doctored some of the photographs by adding captions and,
being unable to decide which to send to John, ended up not sending him
any. We like to think he would have enjoyed all of them and we are
including them with this collection so that those who knew John can enjoy
them on his behalf, which is the next best thing.

One of life's gentlemen, John Burgess was larger than life and will be sorely missed. We consider ourselves privileged to have been amongst those who were lucky enough to have made his acquaintance. God rest John Burgess, asleep in the deep that
he loved so much to sail upon and watch over his family who, although we
never met them, are in our thoughts.
