| Just as we were nearly ready to launch a new domain, put our nautical magazine back online, along with several other sites, and start again, we discovered PowWeb! What was on offer was 500MB of web space and plenty of services with it, including support for FrontPage 2000, our web-building program of choice, for less than US$8 per month. Since then, our space has been increased to 5 gigabytes without us being asked for a single cent more!
One of the features of PowWeb that is brilliant for novices and seasoned webmasters alike, is their user forums that allow PowWeb's clientele to talk to one another, to give and receive advice and help with the range of topics involved in creating and maintaining a website. We even have forums where we can talk about other topics, including the Off-Topic thread started by yours truly...
For various reasons, we have managed to avoid owning a credit card, until very recently, and PowWeb allowed us to pay for two years in advance via Western Union, for the hosting and our new domain name registration as well, so that we didn't have to worry about it for a while and could continue to avoid having any outgoings from the bank that are not instigated directly by us at the time.
We have since renewed our two-year package, this time using MoneyGram to wire the cash to
PowWeb.
The e-mail account with the website is excellent. We get 50MB of storage space for our e-mails, can create masses of different e-mail accounts and can create new folders as needed, to make managing our mail as easy as possible. We have opted to have a single account with all our mail being sent to that, as it's easier for us.
Like the host server that looked after our old magazine site, PowWeb are in California and our first contact was with a young man called Bret, seen here with his wife Lucy. Bret, it turned out, was volunteering with PowWeb, pending the launch of a book he had written and which he told us was about to be featured on Oprah Winfrey's show. Distinguished company we keep these days!
So far, we have enjoyed help and support through the forums and via e-mails from PowWeb staff and we are looking forwards to a continuing happy association with the company, both as clients and as affiliates.
We should point out, in case there is any question about it, that we were perfectly happy with our previous hosts too - the only drawback with our previous arrangement was that we had been obliged to get a friend to use his credit card and pay on our behalf. This meant that the website was technically his, in spite of our having reimbursed him in cash. Such an arrangement is unwise since, apart from any other possible outcome, any legal problem with the site could have become his problem too, as the legal owner of it. Obviously, we don't expect to have any legal problems, but you never know what will happen!
By the way, if you decide to get your website hosted by PowWeb, we'd appreciate it if you would use the red Proudly Hosted by PowWeb button at the top of any page in this site to find out about the service and sign up for it, as we receive a little commission for each client referred by us. You too, will be able to earn commission in the same way if you want to, once your site is up and running, by applying to become a PowWeb affiliate!
