In this issue we touch on three topics: schooling for children on the move; safety for children in the Internet jungle and looking out for ourselves a little, online, with virtual makeovers and even possible attempts at a real one... Incidentally. in case you are wondering, we gain nothing by your going to any of the websites mentioned on this page.

EDUCATION ABOARD

One of the major preoccupations for parents of sailing children, especially in full-time live-aboard families, is ensuring that children don't just acquire an education from their travels but also gain a formal education, or at least the equivalent of one, whilst they are at an age when learning is easier and their peers ashore are taking school for granted.
A website that may be of interest is
http://www.learning2000.com  on CD Rom schooling while cruising.

With Internet facilities available in pretty well every nook and cranny of the world, these days, there really is no reason why our children can't have a first class education wherever we may be.

MarineZine has a reasonable reference library, added to regularly. We are awestruck by the range of educational discs available and the simplicity of the systems designed to allow one to use them. If a student has access to a computer and this sort of educational software, we believe that an ordinary teacher could be more of a distraction than a help!

We will be glad to publish details of any site you care to tell us about that is involved in the education of children 'at home', i.e. not in a school, and to hear about your experiences with teaching your children on board.

THE DANGERS OF 'CHAT' ROOMS
 AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

Meanwhile, our children are increasingly taking to the Internet for companionship, fun, stimulation and 'chat'.

If you don't know about the inherent dangers to your children in open 'chat rooms' you may like to get an idea by visiting http://www.chatdanger.com set up by Nigel Williams to alert parents to the risks.

If you already know the dangers you may also know that kids are prepared to take risks in order not to be left out, unless someone finds them safe places to go.

Take a look at http://www.atkidz.com  a website set up by parents who wanted their children to be able to chat to one another safely on the Internet.

Moderated by 'chat master' Neil Blackburn, the messages are 'cleaned up' as they come in. Swearing is scrubbed out and personal information that might give away a child's identity or location is taken out. The 'CM' as Neil is known to the kids, pinpoints adults attempting to infiltrate the chat room and sees to it that they do not succeed.

Other places to go for information about protecting your children on the 'net, rather than keeping them away from the 'net, can be found at http://www.sheeze.com/Safe  which gives safe surfing guidelines http://www.safekids.com  and http://www.childnet-int.org  which is an organisation working to make the Internet safer for children.

LOOKING AFTER No.1

If one of the reasons you took to the sea was to commune with nature, you may like to take a look at http://www.holistichands.co.uk a marketing site for products that have been produced without torturing living creatures. There are a lot of good 'natch' products listed, money-back guarantees and swift delivery times.

Want to have fun, experimenting with new makeup, minus the cost and the mess? Try sending a photo (just follow the instructions) in to the http://www.changeslive.com  website and play around with different lipsticks, eye-shadows, skin applications etc. There's nothing to pay but, as the software takes a little time to download, it's a good idea to start the process and go do something else while you wait.

Last, but far from least ...

CARING FOR OTHERS

This is just such a lovely project that we HAD to put a link here to http://www.pagesforchildren.com/ which is a non-profit organization that sends colouring pages to terminally ill children. They call it helping Children To Smile One Page At A Time...

Found any good websites other readers might be grateful to know about? We'd love to hear from you!
