'It's all too easy to fall into the trap of buying
clothes because they're the 'latest' thing, without realizing that you're
going to look a complete idiot when you wear them. My thighs seemed
perfectly OK to me until I squeezed them into tight pants and then I also
discovered that I had a bigger backside than I might want! It's important to wear what you look and feel good in.
Who wants to feel like a sheep anyway?'

Good point, Patricia!
We sometimes worry about the ease with which teenagers,
like the rest of the population, can be drawn into making purchases that
will soon be regretted. It seems that many companies deliberately target
teenagers because they know how important it is to the young to be 'in'
and are playing on that need to belong and fit in. As if that were not bad
enough, some of the most expensive brands are just as badly made as the
cheapest ones and soon start falling apart. Unless you are made of money,
it's hard to see how your wardrobe can possibly keep up with the fashion
anyway.
One good thing about fashion, though, is that designs
that go 'out' eventually come back 'in' again and you can pick up some
fantastic clothes, second hand or in the sales, at knockdown prices while
they are 'out', lock them in the back of the wardrobe and bring them out
once they are 'in' again. That's if you haven't been lucky enough to
discover that your mother, or even your grandmother, used to wear what has
just become the 'latest' thing and has kept it in a trunk in an attic somewhere!
You've probably heard about the opening of LWA Malls, our own chain of
online department stores? If you are in the US, a great place to look for
bargains is in the Teen Fashion
Department.
The computer games industry also seems to be fashion
conscious, these days. A young man in a local Internet café was
overheard, just the other day, saying "Oh, you're not still playing
that old game, are you?". A quick peek at the screen of the boy he
was talking to revealed that he was referring to a game that only came out
in 2002! What would he have said if the game had been chess?!
Have you something to say? We'd love to hear it! Write to marinezine_teens@linnetwoods.com
and tell us all about it!

Do you know someone who may be talking about running away
because of problems at home? Has someone you know run away but kept in touch
with you? Are you thinking of running away yourself? Please click on the
link to the Runaway Teens organization and then decide for yourself what is
the best you can do to try and help resolve the situation, whether yours or
someone else's. It can be hard, as a teenager, to see things from any other
perspective but our own. This website may help to make you, and anyone else
you want to tell about it, aware of the bigger picture. |
