The HMS 'Rose' is the largest active wooden sailing vessel in the
world.
A replica of the 18th century Royal Naval frigate, HMS 'Rose', that cruised the coast of America during the Revolutionary
War, the 'Rose' was built in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
She is the only Coast Guard certified class A sail-training vessel in North America providing sail training to the general
public.
Well, actually, this year she won't be. She has been cast to play the role of HMS
'Surprise' in 'Master And Commander', a major motion picture based on the works of Patrick
O'Brian, the creator of Captain Jack Aubrey and ship's surgeon/undercover agent Stephen
Maturin, heroes of a string of wonderful sea-faring novels based aboard the HMS
'Surprise'.
Unfortunately, Patrick O'Brian passed away just over a year ago but he
would, surely, have been proud to have the HMS 'Rose' represent the flagship of his immensely popular
books.
Whilst the public will have to wait until next year to get their sail-training aboard this fabulous
vessel, the advantages are numerous.
By the time the 'Rose' returns to her normal duties she will be sporting new decks, sails, running rigging, engines, improved bow and stern decorations and a long list of other rewards for participating in the making of a movie which many, including the editors of this page, are greatly looking forward to
seeing.
