You may remember that, in the last issue, Chris Baily who is both a yachtsman and an oil rig worker, mentioned that quite a few of his co-workers are boaters. It set us to thinking.

The life of an oil-rigger wouldn't suit everyone but, if you are a person who is happy when sailing across oceans in a yacht, the solitariness of an oil-rig would not be as alien to you as to some. We wondered how a person who was interested in working in the industry would go about finding a job and our research produced a find that is akin to discovering a treasure chest beneath the keel in a shallow bay... the man who created the site introduces himself there, too and  here are excerpts from his brief self-portrait...

"My name is Martin Lewis, born 21st September 1969 in Pembroke, West Wales.

Most of my time offshore has been spent in the North Sea, UK & Dutch sectors but I spent most of 1995 working in the Irish Sea off Cork and also off my home Pembrokeshire coast.
I am currently working on the Exxon Mobil 'Jade' platform (seen above) offshore Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, Central West Africa."

Martin is the Radio Operator / Heli-Admin on 'Jade'. The website he has put together is magnificent and, amongst other fascinations, it includes comprehensive information for anyone interested in working on the rigs.

From presenting yourself in the right way to attract job offers to remembering to visit the loo (WC) before the helicopter taking you to your first rig takes off, Martin covers every detail in an interesting and helpful way.

Even if you're not interested in working on a rig, if you've ever wondered what it's all about this site should go a very long way towards satisfying your curiosity. You may also find yourself in Ham Radio heaven, too, if you click the right button...
