 In
the French West Indies, as on many islands in the Caribbean and elsewhere,
things are done on a somewhat smaller scale than perhaps in most places on
larger land-masses.
For one thing, the docking facilities, for larger cargo vessels to load and
unload at, just aren't there and, for another, the quantity of cargo to be
shipped in or out tends to be smaller.
Thus, when it comes to the movement of cattle, for instance, the vessels
used to transport them between the islands tend to be smaller and the
methods of getting them onto and back off the vessels are perhaps not the
easiest in the world to employ.
If you have ever worked with cattle, you will know that they are fine
whilst calm but extremely difficult to work with once frightened.
We were impressed with the air of calm about this operation on St. Barths. Apart from one
steer with 'attitude', things seem to have gone off pretty smoothly...click
