Are you a Power-boating fan?
Do you race, or just enjoy a spin? Do you build powerboats?
Tell us all about it!
MORE THAN JUST A WASH-MACHINE!
There can be no doubt that the sound of a powerboat firing up, coming in or just passing by causes heads to turn and look in the direction the sound is coming from.
There is something about the way they look that makes them interesting, even to those who would not dream of actually getting into one!
In the picture is ' Livin' The Dream' pictured bow-to on a jetty at Simpson Bay
Marina, Sint Maarten, in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean. She is typical
of the good-looking powerboats used for fishing and beach-hopping at
weekends by wealthy locals and their friends.
Most of the people who own them are considerate
towards boats moored and anchored nearby and reserve their displays of speed and
power for when they are at a reasonable distance from other boats. Occasionally,
rather than turning to stare in admiration, it is with irritation that
neighbours glare at a power-boater who has been so bad-mannered and selfish as to create a disturbing wake near other
vessels.
The majority have the manners to get well clear before giving throttle
but,
like any other sector of our community, there are some bad apples who let the
rest down. This has given rise to notices in many places proclaiming 'NO WAKE
ZONE' which, unfortunately, spoil the look of a place and are preaching to the
converted - the selfish types still rush through anchorages and into marinas
causing havoc, regardless of notices. Still, a well-handled powerboat, whether
the sport-fishing type or the racing speedboat has an allure of its own...ah, that throaty
sound, rising from purr to roar,
now that attracts attention!
If you are an owner, builder, crew or anyone connected with the world of
power-boating, we'd love to hear from you.
Don't worry about your talent as a writer, just talk to us as you would a potential
power-boater and we'll edit later, if necessary! We're interested in the
social, technical and practical aspects of power-boating, if you have pictures
to send us, so much the better!
