WORKING WITH IMAGES

It is wise never to use the original image file when working with images - make a copy and start with that, leaving the original safe from harm. It is sensible to keep originals in a separate folder from working copies so that mistakes will not be made. It also saves you from having to rename copies to prevent them overwriting originals before you are ready to do so, if ever.

You may like to use a series of folders to keep different stages of work in or number images in series so that you can return to a previous stage if unhappy with the outcome of the latest alteration. This also helps when you are teaching yourself what different functions are and what they actually do - You may like to keep a text file on the go, and add brief descriptions of what you are about to try and do, followed by the image title (numbers are easiest for this purpose) and a comment about how the outcome compared with expectations, etc.

If you start with a copy and add _001 to the existing name, saving subsequent saved altered images with the numbers _002, 003 etc., by comparing all the others to 001 you can see the effects your editing has had.

Image files can take up a lot of space on a hard drive. If you have finished a stage of a project, it is a good idea to delete any image files that you will not be needing any more.

If you want to see how an image will turn out in a different format, .gif for example, do save it as a bitmap first and then save a copy as a .gif. If all the colours change to something you detest, you will still have the bitmap to return to and can try making a copy in .jpg format, for example, to see if that turns out better.

Do bear in mind, when creating images that will be viewed in different browsers , that custom colours may not always look the same in every browser. If you want to be absolutely certain that the colours you send are those that arrive, use only the basic colours in your images unless you know that the recipient's computer shows hues in the same way that yours does.
