Most people, when asked what DVD is short for, will say "Digital Video Disc" but actually it is the abbreviation for 'Digital Versatile Disc' and ROM is the abbreviation for Read-Only Memory. The DVD has been available to the public since March 1997 and is capable of holding approximately seven times as much data as a CD. The technology that makes this possible is along the lines of that which produces the CD only more complex. Apart from the DVDs that we are all fast becoming accustomed to, with films on them, the blank DVD is gaining popularity as a backup medium, especially now that it is easy enough to keep adding to a CD or DVD as necessary. There was a time when the remainder of a CD or DVD was rendered unusable at the end of a recording, or 'burning' session. Like the CD, the DVD is a delicate medium and cannot be expected to last particularly long unless in perfect storage conditions, so it is wise to make a backup of your backup periodically... |
